Frequently Asked Questions

Are the teams competitive or merely recreational?

The purpose of the program is to provide competitive athletics for home school students.  Athletes earn their playing time with effort and time spent developing their skills to encourage the development of a work ethic that will benefit them throughout their lifetime.  Our athletes compete well on the state and national level through the application of excellence in teaching the fundamentals of each sport.

Are there any restrictions on who can participate in the Knights program?

All athletes must be at least 50% home schooled, (currently enrolled and actively participating in schoolwork), living with a parent or guardian at least 25 years of age, and meet the age requirements for each particular team.  Each athlete must complete the required forms, pay their team fee, and conform to the Athlete's Code of Conduct.

Is it expensive to participate?

Each team in each sport operates on a budget derived from the actual expenses incurred for that team throughout that season.  The budget is divided equally amongst the players on that team to arrive at an individual team fee.  Team fees throughout the past year have ranged from $35 each for track to around $400 each for varsity basketball and cheerleading.  Uniforms must also be purchased in addition to the team fee.

How can I afford to participate?

We have been blessed with many recurring fundraisers that are available.  Nearly all the athletes earn enough through the fundraisers to participate in multiple sports throughout the year.  A diversity of methods are provided to ensure suitability for almost anyone to participate.

Can I feel comfortable entrusting my child to the influences of the coaches and other athletes?

All of our head coaches must submit a resume, interview with the SHSK Board, and are screened with background checks.  All coaches must abide by an established Coaches Code of Conduct and must submit to the Athletic Director and the SHSK Board of Directors.  As a Christian organization, coaches are asked to pray at practices and conduct themselves as Christian role models.  Each athlete is required to sign a Players Code of Conduct and adhere to it.  Practices are open for observation as long as observers are not a distraction.  Notwithstanding the fact that youth can be a difficult time of life, our athletes as a whole are very well-behaved students from good families.

How do the athletes get to the away games?

One of the greatest attributes of the Knights program is the involvement of the families.  Parents are responsible for arranging transportation for their children to all practices and games.  Nearly all of the families attend as many of the away games as the home games, which makes for a great fan base for our teams at every game.  If you cannot attend a game, you may make arrangements for your athlete to ride with another adult over 25 years old and a travel letter is provided to be signed and notarized, authorizing that adult to be responsible for your child.

Is there any possibility of my child pursuing sports in college if they play for the Knights?

While that possibility cannot be ruled out for any child, regardless whether they even participate in sports in high school, opportunities are becoming increasingly available as home school sports programs gain more recognition nationally.

Through a currently developing program, the Knights are focused on becoming more intentional in partnering with Christian colleges for the purpose of mentoring opportunities for both players and coaches, a certification program for our coaches, and exposure at the college level for our athletes.

We are currently partnering with Evangel  University our baseball program for high school boys and we have been blessed by college coaches from Evangel, Baptist  Bible College, Central Bible College, Southern Baptist University, Drury College, and MO State University donating their time to help with our basketball and football programs as well.

How can I help build the Knights program?

Our goal is to seek out the financial benevolence of individuals or entities to purchase 10-15 acres and build a youth sports complex that would include football, baseball, and soccer fields, a gymnasium, and a track.  We experience difficulties reserving and renting gym time for practices and games throughout the basketball season every year.  We are currently blessed by the benevolence of High Street Baptist Church allowing us to use a football practice field rent-free, and Evangel University  for the use of their beautiful baseball field, also rent-free, and Christian Schools of Springfield for the use of their track and field equipment and facility, also rent-free.

We believe our own facility would provide an identity and a witness to our community to the grace of God and the scope of home school athletics.  Assisting in the accomplishment of that goal will undoubtedly be a blessing that God will allow to be shared by many, but with Him, all things are possible.  We are a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that accepts tax-deductible donations.

If building a facility is not what you had in mind, the Knights organization always has an abundance of opportunities available for anyone desiring a place of ministry.  The program was built by volunteers over a decade of many hours of dedicated service.  Each team is supported by those who go unnoticed while serving in ways such as;  keeping the book, sweeping the floor, filling the water bottles, operating a video camera, keeping stats, serving in concessions or admissions, running the clock, website updates, assistance coaches, etc.  This is obviously not just a spectator sport program!
